San Diego
The City of San Diego purchased the Star of India, which was built in 1863 in the
Isle of Man. The ship had fallen victim to neglect and disrepair, and was towed to the San Diego harbor in 1923. There it stayed until it was fully restored, and in 1976 she put to sea for the first time in fifty
years. Under the command of Captain Carl Bowman, she
sailed beautifully that day, to the applause of
half a million other fans, ashore and afloat.
San Diego is also the home of numerous military facilities including Navy ports and Marine bases. It is the home port of three Navy
supercarriers, the USS John C. Stennis, the Nimitz and the USS Ronald Reagan, five amphibious, several nuclear submarines, and numerous smaller ships. One of the United States Marine Corps' two Recruit Depots is located here. Several Navy vessels have been named San Diego in honor of the city.

The focus of San Diego seems to be
ever changing, and each change adds to the city's
complexity and attractiveness. The city began as a
remote Spanish mission and later came to be
dominated by navy and marine bases. More recently,
San Diego has established itself as a leader
in scientific research and as a near perfect place
to live, retire, do business or visit as a tourist.
Its year-round benign climate would probably be
enough to lure some people, but add to that its
historic attractions, the Balboa Park complex
(including museums and the world-famous San Diego
Zoo), its beaches, Sea World and its proximity to
Mexico. All in all, it's a very attractive
package

One of the most lushly planted urban parks
in America, Balboa Park, is a horticultural paradise offering a magnificent
backdrop for the cultural attractions. The relaxing
atmosphere created by the stately rows of palms,
forested lawns, and ever-changing floral displays
greatly enhances a visit to the Park. The City of
San Diego's Park and Recreation Department manages
and maintains the grounds of this spectacular public
resource. |
